Have you ever been laid off? If your answer is “yes,” then you may have seen VUCA first-hand. VUCA stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity in a work environment. To manage how you deal with these factors, it might be valuable to take a quick assessment to understand your traits and skills, Before we get there, first let’s talk generally about traits that are necessary in today’s workplace.

Adaptability

This is your ability to accept and move with change. For example, if you work as a financial advisor, nurturing this trait will help you deal with the ever-changing regulations that come from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Resilience

Resilience is accepting disappointment, failure or unmet expectations and still pressing on. A VUCA environment often sees many ups and downs. A resilient individual learns from the experience and uses those learnings to improve future outcomes.

Be a Problem-Solver

Finding the answer – or a path forward – in complex situations is highly valued. Those best at problem-solving are able to break down the issues, look at them from a variety of perspectives and articulate what can and should be done. Some of the best ways to hone problem-solving skills are to think logically and to practice, practice and practice.

Continuous Learning

Many positions involve a lot of change because the tools used on the job are constantly evolving. Technology and leadership are great examples. Training, development and continuous learning must be prioritized in these types of roles. Webinars, workshops, industry blogs/websites and peer-to-peer collaboration are some of the ways you can continuously learn about your field. Even if the learning must happen on your own time and/or with your own funds, you’ll be better off for it in both the short- and long-term.

While VUCA may be here to stay, focusing and building on these general traits will aid in your long-term success. Pair them with your own skills and superpowers in the right job and you’ll almost assuredly find fulfillment and satisfaction.
