Deciding to meet with a career coach often begins with a quiet realization that something in your work life is calling for attention, support, or change. Maybe you’ve already had a brief introductory call, and now you’re preparing for your first real session. The first meeting isn’t about having all the answers. Think of it as a conversation meant to help you breathe a little easier, not a performance you need to prepare for. Showing up with openness and willingness to explore lays the foundation for a successful partnership with your coach.

Before you meet, take a moment to reflect on your work life: what’s going well, what’s feeling heavy, and what you wish could change. Even a few honest notes can help you step into the session with clarity.

When you talk with your coach, share more than your résumé. Our paths in life and at work are very rarely linear. Coaches can support you best when they understand the whole human sitting across from them. Share your real story. This includes your turning points, challenges, and the moments that light you up. Be honest about what you’re hoping for, and what you’re unsure about. Your authenticity gives the coach something real to work with.

After you’ve shared your story, don’t hesitate to ask your coach questions. It’s important you understand their style, their process, and what working together will look like. You’re allowed to trust your instincts about whether the partnership feels right.

As you wrap up the meeting, be sure to establish a clear list of action steps. Know which tasks need to be completed in order to move forward in your career journey and follow the process that your coach recommends related to any future meetings or chances to report back on the progress that you’ve made.

It may be helpful to journal or write a few sentences of reflection about the meeting in order to have some key takeaways to ponder. Did you feel understood? Did new ideas or possibilities start to surface? Sometimes the most important insight arrives after the call ends.

No matter what, remember this: reaching out for support is already an act of courage and self-leadership. This first meeting is just the beginning, and it has the potential to open doors you didn’t realize were waiting for you.
